It is Second Saturday and the sacramentoartscene.com staff has decided to meet at the Second Saturday location friendly, Original Pete's at 20th and J. I catch a bus on J Street and head up to what is now being referred to as the Annual Meeting. I exit at 19th it is only a short walk up to Second Saturday Central namely 20th Street. The meeting is in progress at the highly coveted dinky bar. We sip smart drinks, actually beer, catch up and eat pizza. This year it has been decided unanimously to put the RT into art. We will put the walk back into Artwalk. Right outside of Pete's, as we were leaving, are representatives from Sac City Rollers, who are actually on their skates. The Rollers are presenting Roller Derby March 22 in Davis. The Rude Girls will throw down with the Sweaty Bettys. We will be there.20th Street and environs bustle. The 20th Street Art Gallery digs deep into their band file with a group playing “it ain't got a thing if it ain't got that swing, doo wop a doo etcetera”. We swing about and shake it all about past Sakata Garo. Huh nothing on the walls? Now that is brilliant. Wait there are display tables, it was too good to be true. We walk up J turning left on 21st. We have to stop by the gymnasium in the middle of the block. They have been a Second Saturday player for a couple of years. One must see what art is to be discovered among the barbells. We continue up the north side of J Street to a dimly lit art bazaar entered via a side alley. This is definitely the idea and with daylight savings time, next month we will be able to see the paintings. On this same block is an antique and possibly second hand store. They have a DJ, this is beautiful everybody wants in on the action. They display paintings also. What next Taco Loco? You guessed it the 9th and J Coalition is inside with paintings, music, and $3.00 margaritas. Maybe next month the tables can be stored out of the way. Make the Tacos et cetera ala carte so the art walkers aren't interfering with somebody's dining experience. Or maybe I should put a little shut up in my mouth. One night a month the art scene pumps up the central city streets. Second Saturday gives us a glimpse of that 'vibrant city' tag we eagerly wish to describe as being Sactown. “The artist has the ability to breathe soul into the product of the lifeless machine”. Only two centuries old, Sacramento is a young city. Does that make the art scene a toddler? Judging from the crowds it is definitely loved, subsequently growing fast. Oh were making noise all right and the future looks bright. Long live the great American republic, freedom, Sacramento, Second Saturday, The Sacramento Kings, The Tour of California and Roller Derby.
